Powell, Mullings move up IAAF rankings
CMCThursday, July 01, 2004

Asafa Powell
MONACO (CMC) - Jamaica's rising sprint stars Asafa Powell and Steve Mullings have moved up the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) rankings in the 100 and 200 metres, respectively.

Powell won Jamaica's National Championship 100 metres last weekend in a national record of 9.91 seconds, which moved him up one place to eighth in the Event Ranking.

Reigning world 100-metre champion Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis also moved up a place after his win in Gateshead, England last weekend. Collins finished in 10.21 seconds and now ranks fifth, only a single point behind the fastest man of the year, Shawn Crawford (9.88).

American Bernard Williams is number one in the event.
Mullings is the region's biggest mover, coming into 23rd spot in the 200 metres for his first appearance ever in the rankings.

Grenada's 400-metre world-leader (44.47) Alleyne Francique remained number two in the Event Rankings - behind American Jerome Young - with his solid string of performances this season.

In the men's long jump, the Cayman Islands' Kareem Streete-Thompson moved up to 12th position after holding down the number 20 spot for most of the season.

In the women's rankings, Jamaican quarter-miler Lorraine Fenton's short reign at the top of the rankings came to an end when Mexican World Champion Ana Guevara moved back to pole position after her season-opening win in Gateshead.
Fenton has been inactive for most of the outdoor season because of a recurring hamstring injury.

Like her Jamaican counterpart Mullings, Veronica Campbell has begun to make her presence felt on the world stage, with a 15th position ranking in the 200 metres, after her 22.18 seconds world-leading effort at the Jamaica Nationals.

This is Campbell's first top 50 placing in that event for the outdoor season.

Cydonie Mothersill of the Cayman Islands also progressed in the 200 metre rankings, moving up one place to fifth after a string of good performances in June.

Another Jamaican sprint ace, Aleen Bailey, has also moved up the rankings, but in the 100 metres, making her first ever top 10 placing at position number nine.

Bahamian Chandra Sturrup remains the World leader in that event.
